MILESTONES

10 YEARS
The organizational values of the United Katehnuaka Longhouse began taking shape in early 2010. Our founding members immersed themselves into Cultural Revitalization Initiatives and Recognition Efforts for the Tuscarora Indians of North Carolina. They concentrated specifically in Robeson County and its surrounding areas.
After providing services to Tuscarora people within the surrounding areas, the founding members of our longhouse quickly recognized the need to provide a safe space for individuals to be able to practice and enjoy their culture without fear of political persecution. Soon after realizing this platform, we began to work.

From 2010 to 2021 our members gathered in solidarity to continue practicing our traditions without political persecution. We gathered when and wherever possible to ensure that these traditions were not lost.

After some consideration in February 2021 our members decided to formally organize as the United Katehnuaka Longhouse Incorporated. We began applying for grants to further our initiatives for the Tuscarora Indians of North Carolina, specifically in Robeson and its surrounding counties.

In July of 2021, our organization was able to purchase seven acres of land in the Midway Community in Maxton, NC. Shortly after, we begin clearing part of the woodland and preparing a location for our longhouse community.

From 2021 to 2024 our members worked relentlessly on the land in preparation for the construction of our longhouse dwelling. Finally, in August of 2024 after countless obstacles over the past year, construction of our longhouse broke ground and began taking shape. Currently, we anticipate construction will be completed before January 2025.

Since 2010 until now, at every opportunity afforded to us we showcased our beautiful culture and traditions for all to see and appreciate. As an organization we intend to keep our culture alive and are actively planning to maintain a government which fosters growth, revitalization, and harmony for all involved.
